Masonry Sand, also widely known as mortar sand or brick sand, is a clean, uniform, fine-grained material essential for precision construction and hardscape projects. Because it is washed and screened to a consistent, fine particle size, this sand is the standard choice for mixing with cement to create smooth mortar for bricklaying, stone masonry, and leveling pavers.

Beyond construction, its fine texture makes it a reliable material for filling gaps between paver joints, creating level beds for flagstone projects, or even top-dressing certain high-maintenance lawn areas where fine drainage is required.

Not recommended as structural base material under heavy loads.

Applying masonry sand correctly ensures that your hardscape projects remain level and structurally sound over time. Follow these straightforward beginner installation rules:

Paver and Stone Bedding

1. Prepare the Sub-Base: Ensure your primary base layer (typically road base or crushed limestone) is compacted and solid before adding any sand.
2. Spread the Sand: Distribute the masonry sand across the base at a uniform depth of 1 inch. This provides the perfect "screed" layer for your stones or pavers to sit on.
3. Screed Flat: Use a long, straight board or a custom screed tool to pull the sand until the surface is perfectly flat and level. Do not walk on the screeded sand layer after it is leveled.
4. Place Pavers: Gently set your pavers or stones onto the sand base. Avoid pressing down too hard initially, as this will disturb the level surface.

Joint Filling

1. Sweep Dry: Ensure the pavers are completely dry before applying sand.
2. Fill the Gaps: Pour the fine sand over the paver surface and use a wide broom to sweep the material back and forth across the joints.
3. Compact and Refill: Once the gaps are full, use a plate compactor to vibrate the pavers. This settles the sand deep into the joints. Sweep more sand into any gaps that appear after compaction and repeat until all joints remain full and solid.
