Understanding Chop Block Sizing

Limestone chop blocks are natural stone pieces used for walls, borders, columns, steps, edging, and other landscape features. Because they are made from real stone, every piece will have natural variation in size, shape, color, texture, and weight.

Chop block sizes are usually listed like this:

4" x 6"
6" x 8"
8" x 12"

The sizing is not the same as lumber or pavers. With chop blocks, the numbers describe the face height and the bed depth.

The first number is the approximate height of the front face.

The second number is the approximate depth, which is how far the stone goes from front to back.

The length is random and will vary from piece to piece.

For example, an 8" x 12" chop block means the stone has an approximate 8" tall front face and an approximate 12" depth from front to back. The left-to-right length is not fixed. Some pieces may be shorter, and some may be longer.

Face, Depth, and Length

Think of the stone like this:

Height / Face
This is the front side you usually see when the stone is installed. The first number in the size tells you this approximate height.

Depth / Bed Depth
This is how far the stone sits back into the wall or project. The second number tells you this approximate depth.

Length
This is the side-to-side measurement of each individual piece. Lengths are random because chop blocks are natural stone pieces, not exact manufactured blocks.

Smooth Side vs Rough Side

Chop blocks have different textures depending on the side of the stone.

The front face is usually the flatter, cleaner split/chopped side. This is the side most people want showing on the outside of the wall, border, or column.

The top and bottom are usually saw-cut beds. These sides are flatter so the stone can sit better when stacked.

The ends and edges are usually rougher, more chipped, and more natural looking. This is normal for chop block and part of the natural stone look.

So when installing, you generally want the flatter face showing outward and the flatter top or bottom sitting against the next stone.

What to Expect

Chop blocks are natural stone, so they will not all look exactly the same. That is normal.

You should expect:

Natural color variation
Different textures from piece to piece
 Random lengths
 Slightly chipped or irregular corners
 Rougher ends and edges
Some small holes, veining, or mineral deposits
Weight variation by pallet and by piece

These differences are what give chop block walls a natural, custom-built look.

Simple Example

If you order 6" x 8" chop block:

The front face is approximately 6" tall
The depth is approximately 8" from front to back
The length will vary by piece
The front face is the flatter side you usually show
The ends and edges will be more rough and natural

Important Note

All chop block sizing is approximate. Natural stone can vary by piece and by pallet. Coverage and weight will also vary. You are always welcome to come see the stone in person before ordering.
