Product Information

Road Base, also widely known as crushed limestone base, caliche rock, or standard highway base, is a foundational material engineered for maximum structural stability. This blend combines crushed stone and natural fines, designed to lock together into a rock-hard surface when compacted. It is the gold standard for creating reliable sub-surfaces for driveways, parking pads, and heavy-duty paths.

The varying particle sizes allow the material to pack tightly, eliminating shifting and sinking under heavy weight. Whether you are building a new driveway or reinforcing a high-traffic equipment area, this product provides the necessary mechanical strength to support significant loads.

🧮 Skip the Guesswork: Unsure how much material you need for a new base? Avoid purchasing mistakes by utilizing our interactive material calculator positioned directly at the top of this product page. Simply input your total project length, width, and desired compacted depth in inches to get an instant volume requirement for a secure, confident checkout.

This is a structural base material this is not a decorative gravel.

Installing road base properly is the most important step for any structural project. If the base fails, the finished surface above it will fail. Follow these steps to ensure a solid foundation:

  1. Excavate: Strip away all existing grass, roots, and organic surface soil. You must reach the stable native sub-soil layer to provide a firm foundation for the base.
  2. Spread and Grade: Distribute the Road Base/Caliche Rock across the excavated area. Use a heavy rake or skid steer blade to grade the material to your desired slope for proper water runoff.
  3. Moisten: Lightly spray the material with water during the spreading process. Moisture acts as a binding agent, helping the fine limestone dust lock the larger stones together during compaction.
  4. Compact: This is the most critical step. Use a heavy plate compactor or a ride-on roller to vibrate the base until it is rock-hard. You should be able to walk on the surface without leaving significant footprints when compaction is complete.

Coverage Estimates

  • 1 Cubic Yard: Covers roughly 80 square feet at a 4-inch depth.
  • 1 Cubic Yard: Covers roughly 60 square feet at a 6-inch depth.
  • 1 Cubic Yard: Covers roughly 40 square feet at an 8-inch depth.

Road Base is an industrial-strength foundation material designed for high-load applications:

  1. Driveway and Parking Pads: Forms the primary load-bearing surface for residential and commercial driveways, supporting everyday vehicle traffic and heavier equipment storage.
  2. Paver and Flagstone Bases: Provides a solid, non-shifting foundation for laying pavers, flagstone, or stone patios, preventing the surface from dipping or cracking over time.
  3. Retaining Wall Footings: Used to create a stable, level, and structural footing base for stacking heavy wall blocks or limestone chop blocks.
  4. High-Traffic Paths: Perfect for pathways, RV storage areas, or shed foundations that require a firm, weather-resistant surface that will not rut or mud over.

While road base is designed to be permanent, proper maintenance ensures it continues to perform under heavy weight:

  1. Manage Drainage: Ensure your finished grade directs water away from your structures. If water is allowed to pool against the base, it can eventually soften the material and lead to ruts.
  2. Surface Refresh: Over years of heavy traffic, you may notice minor surface wear. You can easily add a fresh "topping" layer of new road base to restore the surface and re-compact it to keep the area level.
  3. Edge Containment: Always edge your road base projects with steel edging, concrete curbing, or stones. Edge containment is vital to prevent the base material from spreading outward under heavy vehicle loads.

Not intended as a decorative surface layer.

Material Type: Crushed limestone base, commonly referred to as road base or caliche.

Common Names: Road Base, Crushed Limestone Base, Caliche Rock, Highway Base.

Texture Profile: Mixture of crushed angular stone and fine limestone dust designed for maximum compaction.

Load Bearing: Engineered to support heavy vehicle traffic and residential/commercial structural loads.

Local Logistics: Available for home and commercial jobsite delivery throughout Austin, Kyle, San Marcos, and surrounding ZIP codes. Can be bundled onto a single delivery order with sand, gravel, or stone hardscapes.

Because it contains fines, it compacts tightly and forms a solid base layer.

What is the difference between Road Base and decomposed granite?
Crushed limestone (Road Base) is a structural material specifically designed to compact into a rigid, rock-hard foundation for heavy-weight projects like driveways and parking pads. Decomposed granite (DG) is a decorative, permeable finish material used for pathways, garden borders, and informal patios; it bonds together but does not provide the same structural load-bearing strength as road base.

What is road base mostly used for?
Road base is primarily used as a structural foundation for any project that needs to support significant weight. It is the go-to material for creating the stabilized sub-surface layer for driveways, parking areas, concrete slab foundations, and paver patio projects.

Is road base good for heavy traffic and weight?
Yes. It is specifically engineered for this purpose. Because road base contains a precise mix of large crushed stone and fine limestone dust, the fines fill the gaps between the larger rocks, allowing the material to lock together and provide high-load-bearing support. It is the standard material used for driveways and commercial parking pads.

Can I order bulk road base along with pavers or mulch for the same delivery?
Yes! Yards Direct makes it easy to bundle your landscape materials online. You can place your order for road base on this page and add your pavers, flagstones, or landscape mulches to your cart for a single, coordinated delivery straight to your jobsite.
