Product Information

Oklahoma Flagstone, also Called Oklahoma Patio Stone, Oklahoma Sandstone, Flagstone Pavers, or Decorative Patio Stone, is a highly durable and visually striking natural stone favored for its varied, rustic aesthetic. These stones feature natural, earthy colors ranging from deep tans and browns to subtle hints of grey and red, providing a textured, "old-world" look for any outdoor living space. Because this is a hand-quarried natural stone, each piece offers unique, organic shapes and a naturally slip-resistant split-face texture that makes it perfect for high-traffic patios and garden walkways.

🧮 Skip the Guesswork: Unsure how much flagstone you need? Use our Material Calculator (linked at the top of the page). Input your total area length and width, and we’ll help you determine the coverage required to get your patio or walkway project done right.

Flagstone is a premium natural material that requires careful installation to create a stable, beautiful, and long-lasting surface.

  1. Clear and Prep: Excavate the target area to a depth of at least 4 to 6 inches, removing sod and organic topsoil to reach the firm, native earth beneath.
  2. Structural Base: Install a 3 to 4-inch base of crushed road base or limestone screenings. Compact this layer firmly using a plate compactor to create a rock-solid foundation that will prevent your stone from shifting.
  3. Setting Bed: Add a 1-inch layer of masonry sand or a fine limestone screening over your compacted base. Screed this level to create a smooth setting bed for the stone.
  4. Placement: Lay your Oklahoma Flagstone pieces. Take your time to arrange them for the best fit, tapping each piece down with a rubber mallet until they are stable and level with one another.
  5. Joint Filling: Fill the gaps between stones with fine masonry sand, decomposed granite, or decorative small-size gravel. Once filled, sweep the excess off the top and lightly mist with water to help the joint material settle.

Patio Surfaces: Creates a warm, welcoming outdoor living area that adds a timeless, natural character to your backyard.

Walkways and Garden Paths: Offers a durable, upscale surface for navigating your garden or connecting home entryways.

Pool Decks: Provides a beautiful, naturally slip-resistant surface that stays comfortable even in direct sun.

Landscape Accents: Perfect for creating natural, irregular stone stepping stones through garden beds or around feature plants.

Surface Cleaning: Rinse with water to remove dirt, mud, or pollen. Avoid harsh chemicals or high-pressure power washing, as this can degrade the stone's natural surface and mortar joints over time.

Joint Maintenance: If the joint material (sand or decomposed granite) washes away over time, simply sweep in a fresh layer to keep the stones locked tight and prevent weed growth.

Sealing (Optional): If you want to maintain the deep, rich colors of the stone, you can apply a natural stone enhancer or sealer. This also adds a layer of protection against staining.

What is the difference between Flagstone and Pavers? Flagstone is a natural, irregularly shaped stone that requires hand-laying to create a custom, organic look. Pavers (like our Lueder or Limestone options) are typically uniform in shape and size, which makes them faster and easier to lay in formal patterns, whereas flagstone is preferred for creating a more natural, classic aesthetic.

Do I need a foundation for an Oklahoma Flagstone patio? Yes. To prevent your stone from cracking or shifting over time, you must install a foundation of compacted road base or limestone screenings. This prevents the stone from settling unevenly into the ground, which is the leading cause of cracked or loose flagstone.

Is this stone suitable for driveways? Flagstone is generally not recommended for driveways. It is designed for pedestrian traffic on patios and walkways. For driveway projects, we recommend our specialized structural materials, such as crushed limestone base or concrete.

Can I order bulk Oklahoma Flagstone along with sand for the same delivery? Yes! Yards Direct makes it easy to bundle your materials. You can order your flagstone on this page and add your masonry sand, road base, or mulch to your cart for a single, coordinated delivery straight to your jobsite.
